Keeping politics in sport

Showing their determination to make sure sport is just a continuation of political intercourse:
U.S. team picks Georgian to lead them in closing ceremony
Yes I know, I’m too suspicious. After all, the athlete in question made the archery quarter-finals, which makes her a natural for the job on her merits. The Georgia connection must be pure coincidence.

Yeah , doubting Thomas, she sounds heaps better qualified than that no-hoper Phelps.
Far be it for the Empire to indulge in such petty games. Didn’t ya know that they lead by shining example & have no need to stoop to the gutter for symbolic ways to yank themselves until they’re raw?

Is it just me, or are the powers aligning for cold war v2.0?
Another example:
The western media seemed to be at pains to portray the Russian/Georgian conflict purely as a product of Russian ‘evil’ when Georgia was the side that drew first blood.

Agree.Agree.But are these individuals the Geo.W.Bush Government, and war mongers to boot!? No just better than good athletes who could of chosen Australia!? Have Russians, indeed, Georgians got anything against me!? The UNO could declare a National Day for all countries and we choose on that day to be some other citizen of another country. Our money spent gets enrolled in that countries development.Problem is there is no country called Moron! So lets fire away at leaders and when the average citizen is,well, a few shekels missing the full blown camel’s hump, but lets not go overboard!?

This is against the whole olympic creed and ethic. Phelps needs to improve dramatically to carry any flag, a gig at shooting arrows is far more important to warmongerers than a swimmer, after all an arrow is a weapon. I have a little chuckle everytime Condy and Shrub get serious and tell the Ruskies what to do, but it’s like hitting an elephant over the head with a wet tram ticket, it has no effect at all, and now the crap has been rolled back, all they have is nice tough words that get them nowhere. Bush is nothing without an army.

I would have thought that if she is representing the US at the olympics, she is by definition an American. But if Dubya had pulled this stunt, it’s almost certain he would have got someone from Atlanta.

Pathetic, petulant pricks. The infantile and miserable Yanks just couldn’t resist sticking it up the Ruskies one more time, could they?
As usual, they’ve got the bull by the horns in this international dispute, as they always do. Like they did in Vietnam, Iraq & Afghanistan, and as they forever will.
Even at the expense of denying their swimmer who won eight gold medals to lead their team into the Olympic closing arena, they’d rather advertise their shitty little point-scoring political statement rather than be content to celebrate the best Olympic games ever held.
What an interminably unhappy and miserable nation is America. A world-wide disgrace in everything. What a gang of nationalistic wankers el-absurdo. And what a national inferiority complex to take cheap shots at world sporting events while they already hold the biggest guns.
Yankee Shits. Who needs them?

“Yankee Shits. Who needs them?”
Well, if you ask many (most?) of our fellow citizens, WE do.
Because oooh-booga-booga-booga we’re surrounded by sneaky foreigners who are out to get us.

“we’re surrounded by sneaky foreigners who are out to get us.” Yes Mars, that’s certainly what most of our fellow citizens believe implicitly.
Those learned and august devourers of the Womens Weekly, New Idea and the footy back pages. Those legions who haven’t strung a single sentence together since high school, and who now can’t pass basic literacy tests.
The millions who couldn’t spell the word library or know one if they tripped over it, and the walloping majority who still think Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan were massing on our borders, hurling spears and threats at us as they prepared to rape, pillage and plunder our Simpson Desert, then Bondi then Flinders Street station.
Yes, it is this surging mass of ignorant swill who constantly defend our love-fest with America. Our great uneducated Australian populace, as dumb as batshit and therefore just as dangerous as the U.S.

I’m not convinced that’s correct. Opinion polls suggest that the USA is pretty much on the nose amongst the majority of Australians. Increased personal exposure to neighbouring countries thanks to global tourism also means that fewer people are scared of imminent invasion. There might be widespread distrust of Middle Eastern Muslims but I think most Australians are informed enough to understand that does not convert into a security threat.
I believe if a political party mounted a well-crafted, sustained message that it was time for Australia to adopt an independent, non-aligned stance in foreign affairs, the message would be very well-received both locally and in Asia. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s a chance of the main parties even considering the idea. They are too in love with the fantasy of being in the inner circles of the imperium.

Ken, do you want the terrorists to win?
Simple question. Do you want the evil terroists to win?
