Reviving something that doesn’t exist

You probably remember Margaret Thatcher’s famous observation that “There is no such thing as society”. It appears however that her successors are prepared to abandon her ideology completely:
In the book, Mr Cameron says: “I’m going to be as radical a social reformer as Mrs Thatcher was an economic reformer, and radical social reform is what this country needs right now.
“Margaret Thatcher in her time realised that the big challenge was reviving Britain’s economy, and we should recognise that the challenge for the modern Conservatives is reviving our society.
“It’s dealing with the issues of family breakdown, welfare dependency, failing schools, crime, and the problems that we see in too many of our communities.”
Thatcher, on the other hand, said:
I think we have gone through a period when too many children and people have been given to understand “I have a problem, it is the Government’s job to cope with it!” or “I have a problem, I will go and get a grant to cope with it!” “I am homeless, the Government must house me!” and so they are casting their problems on society and who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to themselves first.
It will be interresting to see what Cameron actually means by way of applied practical programs. It also marks finis to any suggestion that our home-grown Tories are in any way influenced ideologically by their British counterparts. For better or worse they will have to cling grimly to the US Republicans … or even *gasp* develop some ideas of their own!
Nah … they’ll stick with McCain and company.

I’ve just been reading comments at Troppo re the Baroness’s assertion. I’m none the wiser, of course.
However, I’d argue that a tribe can only ever be as good as its leader and in modernity, societies are pretty much a reflection of the ideology behind governments, up until such time as any opposition to such ideology replaces and usurps it. Leaders are important. Leaders we have none.

Interesting parallel to the Iron Lady.
“…there is no United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world, and that is the United States, when it suits our interest, and when we can get others to go along.”

The Doctors in the Northern Territory have completely decided the intervention was a wasteful sham and duplication, not worthy,in other words of a real government act.Doctors are generally very conservative, but not as conservative as owners of certain Newspapers such as the Australian and Daily Telegraph. Why dont we help the Conservatives in Britain,by asking anyone who feels they have copped it by the Murdoch owned Press to simply be seen burning the bloody things, and keeping a YouTube number for us Australians.Let the family of Murdoch’s see your happy faces burning some of their crap.Remember Rupert hasn’t been an Australian citizen for a long time.

After further visitations to sites overseas Incl. DavidIcke.com and KeeleyNet.com it will come as little surprise that the Russians are developing their own timetable, and no-one elses. That the word Russia as enemy has crept into the bombast,by those who want us to believe their facts. And the unusual lack of observation of the largest flotilla of military ships since 1991 hasn’t even been seen or heard in anyway in the news media of Australia as deep analysis. The pretzel has fallen out of anything Believable from the present American Administration, and the American dollar is probably useful for wiping the arses of raped babies.Simply remove yourselves please,American Administration,The IMF and the World Bank.Go now jump in your secret weapon planes at area 51 and have a holiday on the moon first,so Virgin airlines ,and anyone that cannot stand the killing of the innocent can rightly claim they haven’t used voodoo needles and dolls of you disgusting Americans and your British sidekicks.

Wow! A modern conservative that actually views society as an entity and a shared project rather than as simply a stage for atomised battling interests to lock horns in. A modern conservative who is not a complete economic rationalist! Hopefully some more will come out.

I dont mix with that many people, which doesn’t mean I am anti-social or want to be elitist, its more a function of costs interests disinterested, and now a strong, very strong disbelief in the public human being.Whilst having lived in other small places ,I am shaped to a degree by my interactions. This ignorance of the march larger social networks means,I am not that interested in falsifying the accounts of living existences by my limited existence,or allow anyone to engage with me to enlarge self, where I myself would not contest.I do not think humanity is the following,……social in completion and requirement, political as in life’s self construct must be to live that out as self,{my opinion are not always necessary for me to air to myself},life is unwinding to feel new ways of desiring to belong, replacing myself as human as purpose often called procreation, belonging to unwind too desire another sense of belonging.the pursuit of whatever is self’s limitation as to extending the limitation.Nor is humanity a process of language to be reissued at birth with genetic codifiers alert to unscramble any aerodynamic flowings as hearing, nor function of the organism orgasm as both the trial and error of life. And many other non custodial nodes in the miasms of existence. So when it comes to British leadership, only world wariness sets in,rather than will I be able to guess again what sort of human have we here!I am more concerned about the details that will be missing rather than the details forthcoming. And by way of what dominates some of my existence now Cameron isn’t subject worthy. But a Australian Warship captain maybe,if the ugly Americans enter the Persian Gulf to frisk up Territory both land and sea,and lives, yes lives of strangers that arent in any way destitute Americans. Our Foreign Policy and Defense positions are not those I would even let Australians think, they own through Government Representation.Iraq twice, will it be three times ,plus Iran!?Whats Cameron then, but,a diversion!

Maybe the British can teach the Americans something about offshore drilling? Didn’t that North Sea gas go a long way?
Naomi Klein has a bit to say about offshore drilling & “Disaster Capitalism”:

I think we have gone through a period when too many Athletes have been given to understand “I have a problem, it is the Government’s job to cope with it!” or “I have an obsession, I will go and get a grant to cope with it!” “I am a potential Olympian, the Government must train me!”
And they shall.

And Howard Hawke and Keating are now as one!According to a Woman journalist at the SMH.And it is necessary to laugh in a war zone, richly given as advice in the new sweepstakes of advice giving across those with the special skills of leadership that others must follow. So ,it would seem,if this advice seems laughable in itself and sounds like it came from a bad novel or TV sit-com,or some Cliche’ so intemperate almost in its worthiness, that it makes me laugh.I will also hazard a guess that the Australians in Iraq, probably already have a keen sense of the ridiculous, they may not however have a keen audience, nor want them to be.

“We believe conservatism to be the most natural political tendency, rooted in man’s taste for the familiar, for family, for faith in God. We believe that true conservatism has a predisposition for the institutions and mores that exist. So much of what passes for contemporary conservatism is wedded to a kind of radicalism—fantasies of global hegemony, the hubristic notion of America as a universal nation for all the world’s peoples, a hyperglobal economy…”

Take your snouts to Miranda Devine on Germaine Greer today in the SMH,and Germaine being a example of a limited number of creative anarchists that need restriction in number because they amount to nothing eventually. But Tumbleweed first I suppose. So Miranda fits the bill here, next to Maggie, and they bask and frolic like little Jackie Papers as they day wears on.

Ah! Leadership! The Russians are now moving a large navy flotilla, two for the price of one,as a result of humans, yes humans going out their everyday businesses.Rice says doing deals via military matters isn’t this century. My Gawd! She must of starred in one of those them there Cowboy shows from the ’60’s and got injured.Had a face reconstruction, and had all the bullets removed. Then pressed them down to a new workable American currency. Meanwhile in upstate Queensland, once known as the Sunshine State, until all the newly arrived Pom attractive females got the wrong bite ,not from Mortein, but the sun as UV light killed them off via the bacteria called cancer.I forgot to add to the sentence, one of Australia’s most disliked human beings, has pulled his guns out for nuke power, and talked to all the ma’ams in the State like he was John Wayne .”You all Queenslanders need our Nuke developments like the success I brought to all the little towns with telephoney.”A few Get F ’s from this century were recorded by A.S.I.O ’s latest recruits,so to test them wether their ears will go red ,as they bug all those who hate this type of leadership. My inside source says as yet they all have retained their hearing, because essentially they find no magic in the Baked Bean tin. Thus my supply is still safe. And not to be outdone by any cussed natural disaster,a MP. has decided that Aussies need more stiffness in their backbones whenever there is a disaster natural or otherwise. So I havent rang up members of the N.S.W. Police who saw a bus crash near Grafton or the other other one further south.I am writing my memoirs ,or recording my experiences for any younger living abortion who stops to read the paper litter where ever you find it. Although I did cry when someone said a particular type of African monkey has been found recently to have a colour change in its arse signals. And they are calling it a Ruddy Purple! So with the Roman Catholic Pope all gone now,and the collections on the plate didn’t describe the Bleeding Heart that was Labor in organising this event, and pokies and ciggies battling up hill to regain momentum amongst the nervous of our society.Federal Police knowing a good thing when its happening ,by finding heaps of ecstasy, and young woman finding so many catwalks for their underpants as models, there is hardly anything left to say really by me on leadership. So I have decided to cry every day for an hour, coinciding whilst cutting the onions, pull in my expanding gut,and say to that Labor Leader” You couldn’t sell a raffle ticket in a chook raffle, mate! You are bloody hopeless as an observer of Australians! But you will get over it!”I just had a call from Victoria from some fellers who attended a fire ,and were forgotten about as far as as a salad in white bread and vegemite is concerned, made the news on the ABC at the time.I think they said something about ALP backbones missing amongst this century’s Get F.s !

“It’s dealing with the issues of family breakdown, welfare dependency, failing schools, crime, and the problems that we see in too many of our communities.”
Excuse my ignorance, but isn’t this just exactly the same right wing rhetoric as Thatcher’s? “Welfare dependency” is the dead giveaway.
“family breakdown” = “women should be subservient”
“welfare dependency = “poor people and darkies are bad”
“failing schools” = “poor people and darkies are bad”
“crime” = “poor people and darkies are bad”
“problems that we see in too many of our communities” = “poor people and darkies are bad”

“Excuse my ignorance, but isn’t this just exactly the same right wing rhetoric as Thatcher’s?”
In some ways. But it’s not about “darkies”. It’s about “what do you have to offer in the dying days…soon to be REBORN?”…It’s like the BOOK OF THE NEW EARTH.
The birth rate has been upped concurrently w/ the national standards tests.
The global warming situation is far more dire than the chess players are letting on…and it has more to do w/ the outbreaks of viruses/infections than they are letting on. The World Health Organisation WHO) is full of bullshitters. Diversionists.

The bombers have been practising. Flying low. Listen out for them.
The cities are INFECTED by multi-culturalism, crime, health & education expense, far too many tangents…too many variables as far as the CHESS PLAYERS are concerned.

When Margaret Thatcher came to power the IMF was about to bankrupt Britain, unemployment was rife, business confidence non-existent. Today it is one of the most vibrant and prosperous nations on earth.
The Lady was the 20th century most significan chick by a mile!
You Go Girl!
August 24th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
‘Britain’ … ‘vibrant’ … now there are two words you don’t often see in the same sentence.
All those Olympic medals must have the Anglophiles giddy with excitement.
August 24th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I think it’s great how successful the Anglosphere has been at these Olympics!
August 24th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
It’s wonderful how many medals the rich and populous nations have scored. Surely the Olympics are a fine way of sorting who the ubermensch really are.
But if you take money and size out of the picture the success stories belong to nations like Jamaica, New Zealand, Slovenia, Estonia, Slovakia and Belarus.
Not much glamour there, just hard work. Buy… yay!!!… New Zealand is part of the Anglosphere, right?
August 24th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Indeed. Further evidence that the Muslims, Africans. and other Third World types would do well to try to emulate our example.
August 24th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I confess I’m not familiar with the concept of an Anglosphere. Is it one of those glass balls you can buy in souvenir shops in Brighton? Or a Gordon Brown gimmick to save his ailing conservative government?
