Evaluating Teh Surge

Opinions vary about the impact of the ’surge’ in Iraq and the reasons for any effects that it has had. One frequent point made is that the decline in violence has largely been achieved by paying ex Sunni insurgents to support the American occupation forces … a situation which would seem to be quite precarious and unlikely to endure in the long term.

An informative piece in Stars and Stripes ends with this perceptive observation:

Still, commanders acknowledge that in the absence of political and economic progress, the Sons of Iraq groups could backfire in the long run. As it is, 1,600 mostly Sunni men here and an estimated 80,000 across Iraq are being paid to stand armed in the road, with little view of future prospects and deep ambivalence toward their government.

No wonder the military commanders in Iraq are being far more cautious than the neo-cons back home in hyping the effectiveness of the surge.

A far better plan than any surges is to just piss off out of Iraq cos they shouldna been there in the 1st friggin place.

    Beep,beep!

  2. ABBA Says:

The number of Iraqis killed in February rose by 33 per cent over January, reversing a six-month trend of reduced violence, in a setback to the US military plan to curb the bloodshed ravaging the country.

Conclusion. It has a long, long way to go.

Small explosion hits New York’s Times Square

Call out the B-52’s. Carpet bomb Manhatten. There’s terrorists down there. Or maybe a few Tomahawk missiles from offshore? Never mind collateral damage. After all, what’s good enough for Baghdad is surely good enough for New York.
