Liep Gony was a gorgeous boy with a goofy grin. He was from the Sudan. By all accounts, he wasn’t some knife-toting gang member.
Liep had finished school and was looking for work to earn some money before applying to university.
“He completed his year 12 but he was trying to look for work before uni,” Mr Joshua [Liep's uncle] said.”In fact I think he had a promise to be employed by Monday meat processing in Colac.”
But Kevin Andrews chose to associate Liep, in an interview a few days later, with the government’s new policy to reduce Australia’s intake of immigrants from Africa. As if the attack was Liep’s own fault. For being too black, and for inconveniencing whites by putting his head under their fists, or something.
But questioned yesterday about last week’s fatal bashing in Noble Park of Sudanese refugee Liep Gony, 18, and whether better settlement services were needed, he said:
“I have been concerned that some groups don’t seem to be settling and adjusting into the Australian way of life as quickly as we would hope and therefore it makes sense to put the extra money in to provide extra resources, but also to slow down the rate of intake from countries such as Sudan.”
As Suz says: Andrews embarasses us again.
So who were his attackers?
It yesterday emerged that Mr Gony’s alleged attackers were not African. Two Noble Park men, David Rintoull, 22, and Dylan Sabatino, 19 have been charged with Gony’s murder. A girl, 17, is facing other charges. Victorian detectives will seek the trio’s extradition when they face court in Adelaide today.
So, let me get this straight, Mr Andrews - you were blaming the vicious racism of these three or four white people on the Sudanese community whose child they attacked and killed?
Oh, get them out. Get them out soon. These people are intolerable.

Surely its obvious that being black, and provoking some white thugs (sorry, patriots?) by being so, was all the fault of Liep Gony. We solve the problem of racist thuggery by excluding the non-whites … easier than dealing with racism.

Firstly, thanks Helen for pointing out something that the MSM haven’t even bothered looking at yet (as usual). Looks to me like the Right (sic?) is setting up it’s next migrant punching bag. Back in 1996 it was Asians (”who don’t assimilate”), currently it’s Muslims (”who are all terrorists”…apparently), and next it’ll be African migrants (”who are all criminals”…apparently).
The only point I would disagree with you, is that getting rid of this Government is going to stop the migrant bashing. I’m cynical, and believe a Federal Labor Government would be just as likely to attack migrant groups for their own political gain as the Liberals would. I guess I’m just worn down by 11 years of constant attacks on people’s “Australianness”. It just seems to me that it doesn’t matter how well migrant families integrate into Australian society or how much they love this country. It doesn’t seem to be enough for this Government. What more do they want? Blood?

The death of the young boy was truly sad, but as a Noble Park resident,(of 38 years) take it from me there is a problem here, and the Sudanese youth are part of it.
As far as Andrews goes there is an election coming and if he can get the race debate going he will, this is now a marginal seat.

My 16yo son has been attacked twice this year on local railway stations by Aboriginal youths. Last Friday night at 10pm, he was punched and ‘bottled’ twice (bashed on the back of the head with a bottle).
The police officers attending told me that there is a serious problem with Aboriginal & Islander teenage gangs in the area. This has been confirmed by talking to local teenagers.
What worries me, apart from the damage to my son, is that any publicity I give to these incidents via letters to the editor etc., will result in my being branded a racist but if it was the other way around - white kids attacking black kids - then it would be an entirely different matter.
There are racial problems in this country, and taking sides, right or left, or burying one’s head in the sand is not going to solve them.

Helen, the decision to limit African migration was taken well before the Liep Gony case.
The left prides itself on following reason. Shouldn’t the left therefore be concerned that Australia not reproduce the experience of countries like the US, the UK and France in which crime rates amongst young black men is excessively high?
In other words, instead of simply having “faith” that things will turn out better here than elsewhere, what is the actual strategy of the left for avoiding such a negative outcome?
This is not just a left vs right issue. Remember that in the UK it is the Labor Party leadership who have spoken out against the gang culture amongst young black men.

I would respectfully argue that Kevin Andrews announcement is an attempt to co-opt the issue for the Political Right. Just as Morris Iemma’s remarks after the Cronulla riots was an attempt to co-opt the issue by the Political Left. As soon as politicians of both ilk take over the debate, there’s only one mantra that matters - “ALWAYS GET ELECTED”.
In a pefect world with rational people, we could have an honest and truthful debate about this issue. I agree with you that there’s a definite problem that both the far-left and far-right are either trying to ignore or exploit. And that is the isolation of migrant newcomers to our country and the rise of crimes in those areas. I just wish we’d all work constructively on this together and find a way to resolve this. But I know that it’s never going to happen anytime soon because one side or the other will start screaming “RACISM!” rather than listening to what people like Sans Blog actually have to say.

Just for interest’s sake, I Googled ‘Sudanese refugees in Australia’ and found some very interesting reading. One of the main things that came across is that Australia ie the government does not appear to be providing the social support for these people who are coming from a country torn by years of warfare.

sans blog and seeker, thanks for the excerpt and the report, they both make interesting reading and it’s very much appreciated. So it’s evident that another way to combat this problem is to provide better support services for new migrants arriving on our shores. Make sure they now how to handle the basic tasks (like handling money) that the rest of us take for granted.
Does anybody here think there’s a chance that Minister Andrews would increase funding to these support services while cutting the migrant intake? After all, this is an election year.

Mark, the comparisons to the U.S., U.K., and France won’t bear up. They’re all much different. Most of the African-American population are African only in generations-past heritage, a substantial part of the U.K. African-heritage population is actually West Indian, and the people if think you’re referring to in France are North African and often more of Arab heritage than the Sudanese under discussion here. Is there gang culture participation among the immigrants as among the native-born in these example? Yes, I’m sure there is, although I’d guess that the take-up rate is not dissimilar from that among lower socioeconomic class white kids, and is likely far more prevalent in appearance than in fact, as that gangsta image has proven remarkably popular and durable, even while it hasn’t translated into a similarly durable and widespread growth in the crime rates.
And although you finish by saying it’s not just a left-right issue, really that’s where you started, and your point is entirely in blaming ‘the left’ for not cracking down hard on those uppity non-white immigrants. If we’re not to reproduce the experiences of the U.S., the U.K., and France, then we need to ensure better support systems are in place to assist in assimilation and better educational systems are in place to ensure against bigotry and ignorance. Insofar as there’s any left-right imbalance to address, I’d suggest there’s been a decided skewing by the rightwingers in blaming the victims.

That’s right Sans Blog. It’s what I call ‘Intentional Negligence’. Similar to what we saw w/ the Aboriginal communities before the conveniently (eve of the election) timed ‘intervention’.
No matter where I’ve lived, i’ve seen Right-Wing governments pull the same BS time & time again. They neglect a community (less mental health, trauma, education services, career-based opportunities), usually of colour or non-Christian religious background.
Then in tandem w/ their Media Enablers, carefully over the years - like they’re nurturing a slowly growing BEAST in its nest - they feed the debate…construct the fear & the talking points…turning the volume up & down until they reach a point they really need to call on the RACE ISSUE (like now, as they are floundering in the polls)…then they pump up the racist rhetoric full bore by bringing attention to the crime & poverty in said ‘neglected’ community (having slowly built the foundations of hate, fed the beast of fear)…they BLAME SHIFT…THEY BLAME SAID COMMUNITY & STEREOTYPE IT…& avoid all responsibility for the ‘neglect’.
Then they superimpose ‘neglect’ stories & ‘beat ups’ w/ a flood of images & news of extreme violence & religious bigotry in the Nation(s) the community originates from.
And all the while the Media begins to CONSTRUCT the idea that all coloured communities are problematic (except those that have been SAVED by the the GREAT CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES &/or the GOD OF RIGHT-WING CAPITALISM)…”these coloureds must be saved from themselves, their tribal, primitive brains”…yawn.
Add a doco or current affairs program or two examining the breakdown of a ‘coloured society’ (Dateline tonite - gangs in NZ…i hope this isn’t just another Right-Wing HIT job)…add to that the ‘construction’ of fear & racism in the news (Ch. 9 paying Islander kids to do gang signs in front of train station in Logan - fortunately, caught in the act - & Bill O’Reilly implying that most black restaurants are ‘uncivilised’)…& you get this ‘perfect storm’.
It doesn’t matter to the Right-Wing strategists if it’s a black individual killed…or they kill…as long as they can bring up the combined issues of race, immigration & crime control…& they go:
“coloured people are a problem in society & whites just can’t feel safe if we bring too many in…we won’t…& we will use the authorities to control them…so vote for us…the good, ole Christian hard liners…& types prepared to look the other way when police crush their heads in…nudge, nudge, wink, wink…btw, can we bring up the killing of Christmas by the Lefties yet?”…
Then you get the polls…yes, all a part of the campaign…all across the Media Enabler’s landscape…SKY NEWS just asked “if the Government had it right when it came to the issue of reducing Sudanese refugees”…it’s such an obvious political ploy. Or it should be obvious.
Anyhow, do enuff of this media and political ‘tag team’ stuff on RACE, CRIME & IMMIGRATION and those communities that are impoverished financially, then become self-esteem impoverished…they feel the HATE, MISTRUST, FINGER POINTING…& eventually some of the kids lash out…& the media wolf pack is always ready & willing to HYPE it up…turn it into MORAL PANIC.
The Right-Wing governments live & breathe this stuff, they feed it to the public & the public is often too stupid to realise they are starting to PANIC because of the FOCUS…the often CONSTRUCTED XENAPHOBIA & FEAR. Get the radio jocks beating the same old racist & fear-mongering drums & before ya know it, we’ve got ourselves another RIGHT-WING CAMPAIGN ISSUE.
And screw who gets hurt, whose reputation is damaged, who gives a sh*t that society has been carved up into another political wedge again… divided again….& the efforts of all those pursuing social harmony are squashed like ants.
It’s naked power grab stuff, typical election crap…& it makes the media moguls a mint. And it makes our Democracy weaker as the FEAR-MONGERS grow ever stronger.

depends on how much piss i’ve had, how high you are, the phase of the moon, how long its been since i had vigorous sex, the state of my gut, how hot & humid it is, if my clothing is loose enuff to accomodate the heat, or tight & thick enuff to keep the cold out, which direction the smoke of the campfire has a habit of heading in, what food is available for cooking, the type of grog available, the company, how strong the dope is, if we/someone remembered to bring batteries for the cd/tape player, if i remembered my fave music & am permitted to play it, the amount of mosquitoes suckin’ from my veins, the mood of my wife & whether the log i’m sitting on is stable or not.

I think Andrews has been caught out on this one. He is trying to co-opt a decision made in August to his own ends. Apparently immigration from Africa was to be reduced - the reasons being that things had improved there and in a world awash with refugees other countries had priority. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. Now Andrews decides to exploit it by having a go at playing the race card. What a nasty piece of work.
He’s on the radio now trying to defend himself. Lying through his teeth and caught out. I hope his religious beliefs are true. I wonder how he will justify this when he has to explain it to his God.

Hmmm serious problems with traumatized Sudanese integrating in the community. We can either:
1. recognize the lack of funding and systemic support programs for people that are somehow just supposed to ’snap out of it’ and ‘pull themselves up by their boot straps’.
2. Say these is just something inherently wrong with this scary uneducated black people and even suggest our refugee refocus on the middle east was designed to keep em outta bewtiful white cuntry.

Sadly the Migrant Resource Centres (MRC) are poorly managed and prone to factional and racist elements, seeking to feather their own nests at the expense of those really needing their help.
The Sudanese and Ethiopians need integration assistance. By demonising and ignoring the problem, yet again this Federal Government gives and taketh away… in one fail swoop
Dimia or is that DIaC, have for along time known that MRC’s are hotbeds of discontent. Many a time DIC officers have recommended MRC Boards be zapped and new ones appointed. DIC mgt doesn’t see fit to yet again, (breathes deeply & exhales here) to sort out the problem.
This is no isolated bitch session here DIC Managers are to keen to be YES or No persons, as the situation dictates with CO in Canb, see also Man of Steel and his nominally catholic minister.
A man who righteously states like Ruddock he is an honourable christian man, yet everytime he opens his ‘north and south’ it seems to get lost in the translation!!!
