Losers

The irony continues unabated. I noted at Blogocracy that Mr Bush, if you can believe it, is demanding that the Iraqi PM come up with a plan to save Iraq. Now comes a newly leaked memo written by Stephen Hadley, the deputy National Security Adviser. Without a hint of self-awareness he writes this:

The memo presents an unvarnished portrait of Mr. Maliki and notes that he relies for some of his political support on leaders of more extreme Shiite groups. The five-page document, classified secret, is based in part on a one-on-one meeting between Mr. Hadley and Mr. Maliki on Oct. 30.

“His intentions seem good when he talks with Americans, and sensitive reporting suggests he is trying to stand up to the Shia hierarchy and force positive change,” the memo said of the Iraqi leader. “But the reality on the streets of Baghdad suggests Maliki is either ignorant of what is going on, misrepresenting his intentions, or that his capabilities are not yet sufficient to turn his good intentions into action.”

Ignorant, misrepresenting his intentions, incapable of carrying them out? Didn’t the American people just send a memo to President Bush with exactly the same message?

Americans unfettered optimism allows for them to cope with a news cycle of about 17 seconds. That is why Faux News works well in the US. Most Americans will have forgotten what the mid term election was all about by now and I doubt that they would pick the irony in what our political talking head stated about the Iraqi leader. We are well into the real election cycle now. Time to move on.

I imagine everytime Maliki wakes from fitful slumber there’s a new Donnie Darko reality in the room. If I were Maliki I’d play it seven ways to freedom. He’s got Sunnis, Saudis & Al kidya not (sometimes one & the same) beatin’ the drum of insurgency…Shiites & Iranians doin’ ‘Team Red Crescent: World Revolutionary Army’ on the doorstep…Hezbowlyah trainin’ Mahdi Army & the Gangsta #1 freakin’ deviant
lookin’ guy on the front cover of every borin’ mag this week’ askin’ to do his Colonoscopy
…add the Chalabi mercenary & wheat magician troupe & the Israeli ‘never got over Spielberg’s Munich hitmen’…add a few private boot boys & underworld kingpings…the Kurds from ‘nobody loves me’ territory…& incoming: The Day After Tomorrow…& you can’t blame the guy for playing it like Linda Blair in the Exorcist…

& imagine waitin’ for the inevitable Assault on Precinct Green Zone?

Or being asked to go bike riding w/ GW…or hunting w/ Dick C.?

If I were Maliki I’d hit the road…& don’t ya come back no more, no more…

P.S. Good on the Glass House trio & guests for givin’ the middle finger Aussie salute to all & Fundy…& Howard fuddy duddy…ya had us in stitches people…well done!…. Encore?

Maureen Dowd said about the same thing in her column today — she just took a lot longer to say it.

I said about the same thing on my blog too.

I think the leaked memo was carefully timed to undermine al-Maliki’s negotiating position in Amman. As if he is not weak enough already!

Maybe it’s payback for al-Maliki’s pre-election criticisms. But seriously, who cares? People are dying and these politicians are still playing games and relying on spin. It’s beyond disgraceful.

What a change from those heady, testosterone-filled days after the moron strutted around that aircraft carrier in his flight suit. Does he ever cringe at the thought of that stunt?

This is what happens when you let people who aren’t ready for it play with democracy. They elect leaders who are entirely the wrong type.

The Iraqis need to be educated in how to use democracy properly, otherwise they’ll start making a cock-up of it like the Palestinians did. To oversee a transitional period we need a strong-but-fair ruler who will bring order to the streets.

Does anybody still have a phone number for that Mr Chalabi?
