Idiot wind

President Bush has visited New Orleans, site of the downfall of his Presidency, on the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Think Progress offers this to-do list for the apologetic President:

Less than half of the city’s pre-storm population of 460,000 has returned, putting the population at roughly what it was in 1880.

Nearly a third of the trash has yet to be picked up.

Sixty percent of homes still lack electricity.

Seventeen percent of the buses are operational.

Half of the physicians have left, and there is a shortage of 1,000 nurses.

Six of the nine hospitals remain closed.

Sixty-six percent of public schools have reopened.

– A 40 percent hike in rental rates, disproportionately affecting black and low-income families.

– A 300 percent increase in the suicide rate.

The guy can’t organise the rebuilding of New Orleans. What chance Iraq?

Take it away, Bob:

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin’ south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You’re an idiot, babe.
It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

Bob is still on top of it in these MODERN TIMES:

    The Levee’s Gonna Break

    people on the road
. . . carrying everything that they own

Don’t forget our own Floppy will be on the radio talkin’ about Modern Times and Bob with Andy Ford on his Saturday morning Music Show on Radio National at 10 am - 12 pm. Repeated at 10 pm that night and pod-ed.

It is just so sad. I used to go to New Orleans for work. Although it did have it’s grimy side, the people were nice and the fun part of the day seemed to go on for ever into the night. I hope some of the heart and soul can be returned to the people there.

There’s just one site? I thought it was a never-ending road trip.

So typical of the PR image over substance landscape which passes for politics these days…

    Check out this on-the-spot interview.

One might easily mistake a chat with the most powerful man in the world with one of Jay Leno’s random streetcorner stoner bits. It still amazes me, even after all these years.

All of that plus he made another stack of promises he has no intention of keeping.

How do you know when Junior is telling the truth?

    You can’t. It’s never happened.

Today’s New York Times Headline: “Bush Repeats Vow to Help New Orleans”.

Yeah, and somewhere out there in the badlands of Bush’s USA, O.J. Simpson is still tracking down his wife’s killer…

Bush says “we will stand with the people of southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi until the job is done.” Given how he is standing with the people of Iraq “until the job is done”, that’s gotta inspire confidence!

The real question is: what’s “the job”? As Greg Palast points out, the Bush Boyz are still “doing a job” on New Orleans.

And worse, even a stunt by The Yes Men to highlight the inaction in N’awlins seems to have had no effect. I’m getting increasingly sick of these Teflon politicians who never seem to end up with any of these scandals adhering to them for very long.

That’s a fantastic link Quiet storm - But CNN… lighten up.

How they can possibly make such a story boring is beyond me. Its a great idea for attacking low expectations and shattering the dominant idea (round these parts too) that the government is doing as good as we can expect from them (and that the opposition would do just the same.)
