Journalists and victims

Uncategorized - 27 Comments » - Posted on March, 31 at 10:58 am

Garry Linnell, editor-in-chief of The Bulletin, has a piece up on Crikey defending the media, including his magazine, for writing stories about Tasmanian mass murderer, Martin Bryant.
It seems a number of family members of Bryant’s victims have objected to him receiving media attention, and they have been supported by some within in the media who […]

Cole inquiry: sidebar

AWB scandal - 9 Comments » - Posted on March, 30 at 6:52 pm

Another little snippet from today’s hearings of the Cole inquiry (big pdf) that has no bearing on the issue itself. Just thought it was, er, interesting:
MR AGIUS: We provided Mr Lacava with an electronic copy,
which is why they got to him so late yesterday. We would
propose to do the same with these. We might […]

Cole’s Catch 22

AWB scandal - 7 Comments » - Posted on March, 30 at 11:50 am

Consider the ridiculousness of this situation. Kevin Rudd wrote to the Cole Inquiry asking that it seek to extend its terms of reference so it could investigate whether anyone in the government had breached their obligations in regard to the AWB bribery allegations.
Those representing Mr Cole wrote back and said:
….it would not be appropriate […]

George Bush’s sixth sense

Uncategorized - 13 Comments » - Posted on March, 30 at 8:49 am

With his poll numbers in the gutter, a majority of the American people opposed to nearly everything he now does and concerned about his incompetence, his staff resigning, some of his senior party members under indictment or the threat of it, and having no chance (constitutionally) of being reelected, I guess it is hardly surprising […]

Iraqi caption competition

Uncategorized - 53 Comments » - Posted on March, 29 at 4:02 pm

As I said below, arguments about whether or not Iraq is in the throes of a civil war are not the point. The point is what is happening in the country:
BAGHDAD, March 28 — Sectarian violence has displaced more than 25,000 Iraqis since the Feb. 22 bombing of a Shiite Muslim shrine, a U.N.-affiliated […]

Ahmed Chalabi is a great guy, allegedly

AWB scandal - 8 Comments » - Posted on March, 29 at 12:52 pm

Just an interesting sidebar to the ongoing investigation into the AWB alleged bribes to the regime of Saddam Hussein.
In one of the documents tendered as evidence yesterday at the Cole Inquiry, there is an interesting aside about Ahmed Chalabi, the man still presiding over Iraq’s wheat contracts and with whom Deputy Australian Prime […]

The sovereign nation of Iraq

Uncategorized - 18 Comments » - Posted on March, 29 at 10:51 am

Yesterday I noted that the Iraqi leadership (the elected ones trying to form a government) had asked the US to hand over control of security in the country to them.
Seems Mr Bush has given his answer:
Senior Shiite politicians said today that the American ambassador has told Shiite officials to inform the Iraqi prime minister that […]

Cooperating with Volker 2

AWB scandal - 3 Comments » - Posted on March, 29 at 8:27 am

House of Representatives
Official Hansard
No. 19, 2005
(Question Time)
Monday, 7 November 2005(pdf)
Mr DOWNER: As the Prime Minister said, all of these issues have been given careful consideration by the Volcker inquiry. We provided every piece of information that we could find to the Volcker inquiry, and quite rightly so. I said to my department quite some time […]
